Crew Member Discloses Depression In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also included well-known figures.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, referring to a phone call from a mission companion in the days following the flight.
She portrayed the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and operated research during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her roots – was overshadowed under the deluge of sexist vitriol.
She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
Finding Solid Ground
Months following fulfilling her dream, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose support pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She noted that amid the criticism, important benefits had resulted from the flight, such as increased focus on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
The Historic Journey
The self-operating spacecraft lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that passed the edge of outer space.
The team of pioneers also featured experts in different industries.
The company behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company established by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
